ABSTRACT: People engaged with critical care nurses tell stories of their encounters that highlight how some of these nurses bring distinctive and unique qualities to their relationship with another; qualities collectively described across the anecdotes as ‘different and better’ nursing. While this ‘different and better’ nursing seems to have a positive influence on meeting the complex needs and expectations of people encountering critical care, this manner of nursing is identified as an occasional highlight rather than the norm of care.

The study aims to elucidate an understanding of the recognition of ‘different and better’ nursing by significant others and colleagues as encountered in critical care environments. Grounded Theory methodology will enable an inductively derived explanation to be developed about this phenomenon. The emergent theory will provide a foundation from which to consider how teaching and learning interactions in postgraduate clinical specialist nursing programmes may be enhanced through this understanding.
